Looking Back
Some highlights (and lowlights) from the past week of training.
- Monday
- Actually got outside to do some biking with the day off work. Reaquanted myself with the Camosun hill (it had been a while) for a little aerobic power workout by myself.
- Wednesday AM track workout
- Hit the track with the regular morning crew (Alan, Martina, and Steph) for some broken 1 mile pieces. Felt good doing 1:20 400's so was thinking that I'd be ready to break 5:20 in the mile time trial on Thursday.
- Thursdays 1 mile time trial
- Not only did I not make my 5:20 but I dropped 3 seconds from my PB to 5:30. To make matters worse, Doug passed me in the final 100m's to take the crown (literally) as fastest. Nice work Doug but watch out next time because...
- Looking at my heart rate data, it's obvious I was still tired from Maui. Despite being 3 seconds slower, I averaged 4 bpm higher than my last time trial and hit a heart rate I'd never seen before in training or any race. So hopefully with a little more rest and the ability to pull out that kind of effort, I'll be that much faster next time
- Saturday duathalon pieces at Iona
- Again felt good to be outside but more importantly felt good to do some transitions for the first time since September. Some serious kinks to work out here with my bike shoes but at least I know now.
- Sunday swimming time trials
- Two time trials: 100m and 600m. Broke my PB in the 100 with a 1:16 but struggled in the 600m doing (a disputed) 9:54. Unfortunately there was no video evidence this time around because there are some who argue I did 650m but I disagree. It was just a tough swim. Had some issues getting used to having a lot of other swimmers around but again, good to remember what that's like for races.
